General Qamar Javed Bajwa named new Pakistan Army chief

ISLAMABAD: General Qamar Javed Bajwa has been named as Pakistan’s new army chief, according to local news channel Geo News.

The channel’s special correspondent Rana Qamar told the channel that General Bajwa’s name had been finalized by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday.

General Zubair Hayat has been appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, the channel reported. General Hayat was serving as chief of general staff (CGS) prior to his present appointment.

Lt Gen Bajwa is from the Pakistan Military Academy’s 62nd long course. He was earlier the commander of the important Rawalpindi Corps and is at present the Inspector General of Training and Evaluation at the headquarters, a position Gen Raheel Sharif held before becoming army chief.
